Getting Here & Getting Around

Accessing the Kruger Lowveld region from within South Africa or neighbouring countries is effortless by both air and road.
By air
There are three main aerial gateways to the area, which are Skukuza Airport (SZK) in the Kruger National Park, Hoedspruit’s Eastgate Airport (HDS), and Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (also known as KMIA airport code: MQP). Skukuza operates scheduled daily flights to and from Cape Town and Johannesburg. There are regular flights to Johannesburg and Cape Town from Hoedspruit. Beyond daily flights to Johannesburg, Cape Town, and Durban, KMIA is home to other regional routes, as well as regularly scheduled flights to Mozambique and Zambia.

By road
There is an excellent road access to the region from all directions. The vital N4 connects the capital, Nelspruit/Mbombela, Gauteng and Mozambique. Driving conditions are generally good, giving easy access from Phalaborwa, Tzaneen, Polokwane and Zimbabwe in the north; Lydenburg/Mashishing, Dullstroom and Machadodorp/eNtokozweni in the west; and Ermelo, Piet Retief/Mkhondo and The Kingdom of Eswatini in the south.
Getting around
Many visitors choose the self-drive option when visiting the region for flexibility and to ensure they get to see and do as much as possible. For this, there are major national and international car hire companies in the Kruger Lowveld region, with depots in the towns of Nelspruit/Mbombela and Hazyview and at the airports – Kruger Mpumalanga International Airport (White River), Skukuza Airport (Kruger National Park) and Eastgate Airport (Hoedspruit). Should you opt for a self-drive tour, please be mindful of between towns.
For the adventurous, public transport although somewhat limited, does present an option. There is a minibus taxi network between towns. Scheduled shuttles are available between, Nelspruit/Mbombela, Pretoria/Tshwane and Maputo.
