Steenkampsberg Pass
Connecting Lydenburg/Mashishing and Roossenekal, the R577 is a 71-kilometer tarred road that winds through breathtakingly untamed landscapes until reaching a summit at 2331 metres above sea level atop “De Berg.”
Gaze towards the well-known nature reserve of Verlorenvallei to the northwest, from the peak. Despite being a little off the usual path, this is an amazing road trip.
Take the R577 to enter or exit the Kruger Lowveld region if you have some spare time and enjoy taking detours. Watch out for the three endangered species of cranes (blue, crowned, and wattled) that can be found in the wetland area of the Steenkampsberg Plateau, an untainted habitat supporting a diverse array of animals, birds, and plants.
