Maria Shires Falls

The Maria Shires Falls is a little waterfall in Sabie named by Joseph Brooke Shires Jr, whose mother’s name was Maria. He played a massive role in the forestry industry of the entire Sabie region in the late 1800’s.

His extended family was also instrumental in the spheres of local mining and timber, which remains a central part of the heritage of this area. When his mother died, he placed her grave near the waterfall. Today, visitors can still visit her grave when they explore the Panorama Route.

This is a not so well known waterfall and very private, ideal for proposals or romantic moments. This waterfall is easily missed as it is not clearly marked. It is approximately 17 kilometers from Graskop on the Sabie road. There is 1 train crossing over this road the parking for Maria Shires Falls is closely located to the train crossing.
