Mthethomusha Nature Reserve

The Mpakeni Tribal Authority decided to establish Mthethomusha as a Nature Reserve in 1986. The MTPA is currently authorised to administer the reserve under a collaboration agreement. As a result, unlike provincial reserves like Loskop Dam, the MTPA does not act as the “custodian” of the MTNR; rather, it plays the role of a stakeholder, having agreed to maintain the Mthethomusha Nature Reserve.

The 7 500 ha Mthethomusha Nature Reserve (MNR) is leased by the Mpumalanga Tourism and Parks Agency from the Mpakeni Community. It is managed with the intention of enabling the Mpakeni community to profit from the sustainable consumption and non-consumption of natural resources while going as far as possible to preserve the ecosystem’s biological processes and functions as well as biodiversity. Since the Reserve’s establishment, ecotourism has been seen as essential to achieving these goals.
