A village in the mist

Slightly less than 30km from Mbombela is the picturesque village of Kaapschehoop, often written as Kaapsehoop or Kaapsche Hoop. This tiny and excellently preserved town witnessed its own gold rush in 1882, about the same time as Pilgrim’s Rest and Barberton. A popular retreat with charming stores, eateries, and accommodation, this village has a certain type of charm that keeps one coming back. With it tranquil landscapes and relaxed atmosphere, the village exudes a sense of calm and comfort. The locals are friendly and always up for a chat. One bucket list item is to see the feral horses which grace the escarpment and stroll in and around town. That, and the incredulous views across the escarpment. Kaapschehoop is a gem, hidden in plain sight.
