Long Tom Pass

In order to provide waggoners traveling in the 1800s with an alternate route to the Mozambican port of Lourenco Marques (now Maputo) for trade, Long Tom Pass was constructed between Lydenburg and Sabie. The wagons traveled to the coast from here in ten days. Now, if you use the Long Tom Pass, it only takes a few hours, including border-post protocol.

This magnificent mountain pass gets its name from the enormous silver cannon that sits at the top of the pass. The Boers continually surprised their adversary by hauling this metal monster to the most incredible locations.
